We spent a week in Mammoth Lakes, Ca., over the 4th of July, 1998.  There was a parade, a big fireworks display, and a crafts fair to lure visitors, but the real attraction in Mammoth is the mountain scenery and great hiking.  It's a painter's paradise, because everywhere you look is a snow-covered peak or a deep blue lake that's waiting to be captured.
